City of Houston Commercial Energy Conservation Code

Per the Public Works and Engineering Department - Planning and Development Services Division:

On Wednesday, April 30, 2008 City Council adopted the new City of Houston Commercial Energy Conservation Code which will take effect on August 1, 2008. For your convenience it is now available online; please click here to view.

This code will regulate the energy conservation provisions for commercial buildings as well as apartment buildings over 3 stories. Single family homes of any height will remain under the scope of the 2001 International Energy Conservation Code or 2000 Houston Residential Code, Chapter 11, as applicable.

The following is a list of pertinent changes:

• Historical buildings are required to comply with the code when the code will not affect the historical designation
• More projection factor variations are allowed in fenestration
• Cool roofs are required on low slope roofs (some exceptions apply)
• Commissioning is required to be noted on plans for building envelope and mechanical systems in projects with 50,000 sq. ft. or more of conditioned space
